First of all , just a brief history of myself
I have always drawn and painted ever since I was a child but I also had a passion for biology. I qualified as a biologist specializing in insects in my early career. After leaving the UK I went to work as a medical entomologist in South Africa. I then emigrated to Australia where I retrained and worked as a high school teacher, teaching science and art for many years.
For the last 10 years or so I have gone back to my first love, art and have been practicing as a full time artist. I have been a finalist in the prestigious Kedumba Drawing Award twice, a finalist in the Hans Heysen Landscape Prize, and regularly exhibit locally, interstate and overseas in London. I was the Artist in Residence for Australian Aerospace out at the Army Aviation Training Centre in Oakey resulting in a solo exhibition Tigers, Rotors & Blokes. I have won the Grand Champion Picture at Toowoomba Royal Show and resulting in a McGregor Winter School Scholarship. I have work in collections both here and overseas. Feline Groovy, a joint exhibition with Robbie Erskine, which of course was all about cats and was a great success.
I specialize in teaching drawing classes at Murrays Art & Framing here in Toowoomba and for the past 4 yearsI have tutored a beginners drawing course at the McGregor Winter School at the University of Southern Queensland.
I achieved one of my goals by having my first book , The Gift, published as A Helen Chamberlin Book, published by Windy Hollow Books, at the end of 2012 and released in March 2103. Late last year I have 2 drawings featured in Strokes of Genius on Tone.
I have also started to learn about the wonderful world of ceramics. I am learning hand building, slip casting and wheel throwing. What I love about ceramics is that it combines my love of drawing and painting but adds that special feeling of the clay and creating works in 3d. I am really enjoying being a member of the Darling Downs Potters Club and learning about this wonderful world from some very skilled potters who work at the club and exhibit in Parkside Ceramics, the clubs lovely exhibition space and gallery.
